About This Product

The legendary Joe Strummer played guitar with razor-sharp intensity, with energy and passion blazing with every intense stroke. He was the embodiment of punk culture and a crucial component in its development. His direct, honest, and empowering style would garner a cult following worldwide.

Best known for his work with The Clash, Strummer and his bandmates were a key part of the birth of punk rock and have inspired countless bands to this day. Strummer commanded the stage like a determined punk rock commander and blasted songs out of his guitar like a machine gun. His weapon of choice for the London Calling and Combat Rock eras was his tried-and-tested Fender Esquire®. A perfect match for his no-nonsense playing, the Esquire was the perfect instrument for Strummer to bring out after shows to ease anxiety, and he often had his drummer strumming the strings with drumsticks during the song. This guitar was one of Strummer's favorites and appeared at many of their most famous shows, especially in the band's later years.

We're thrilled to recreate this incredible piece of music history in the Fender Custom Shop for this special, limited-edition piece. Master builder Jason Smith has faithfully recreated the Esquire to its Clash-era look with black racing stripes, custom "Bourbon Street" decals, and a custom Relic finish. Not just for collectors, this guitar is built for hard playing and delivers a blistering tone for anyone brave enough to take it to the stage.

Features include a 2-piece offset-seam alder body with a single-ply eggshell pickguard, a flat-sawn maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, a 9.5" radius, medium jumbo frets, a '59 "C"-shaped profile, and Schaller mini-tuning machines. The Tele® bridge is paired with a hand-wound '55/56 Josefina bridge pickup wired to a 3-way switch and '59 Esquire wiring. Comes with a certificate of authenticity, a custom pink anvil strap, and case with "Strummer" stencil and leopard print finish.
